On March 20, 2019, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that New Zealand will be banning military-style semiautomatic firearms and high-capacity ammunition magazines following a horrific mass shooting by a white supremacist targeting mosques during Friday prayers. Ardern also indicated there would be a national buyback program for these firearms. These actions come just six days after the shooting, in which 50 Muslim worshipers were killed.
Prime Minister Ardern and other government officials in New Zealand should be commended for taking such quick and decisive action in response to the Christchurch tragedy. That said, there is absolutely nothing to prevent us from doing the same exact thing here in the United States of America.
Our Founders acted decisively to disarm violent, lawless individuals in public spaces (Shay’s Rebellion, Whiskey Rebellion, Doctors’ Mob Riot, etc.). They would not have invoked the Second Amendment to tie the hands of legislators during an epidemic of mass killings in schools, places of worship, workplaces, theaters and other places where people congregate.
Legislation has already been introduced in the 116th Congress to ban semiautomatic assault weapons. California Senator Dianne Feinstein is the sponsor of S. 66, the Assault Weapons Ban of 2019. The companion bill in the House, H.R. 1296, was introduced by Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI-1st).

I commend Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for taking quick and decisive action to ban semiautomatic assault weapons following the horrific mass shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand. There is absolutely nothing to prevent us from doing the same exact thing here in the United States. Our Founders did NOT ratify the Second Amendment to prevent legislators from responding to mass killings in public spaces like schools, places of worship, theaters, etc. When confronted with violent individuals engaged in lawlessness, our Founders responded by disarming them and restoring law and order (e.g., Shays’ Rebellion, Whiskey Rebellion, Doctors’ Mob Riot, etc.). Now it is time for our generation to do the same. I refuse to be a prisoner in my own home because of the white supremacist, treasonous (Russia) NRA! As free people, we demand safety in the public square to guarantee life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Like New Zealand, we should also conduct a national gun buyback program using public and private funding. We need a serious deproliferation effort to get battlefield rifles out of our communities for good.
