Action Alert:
Call for Charges Against Owner of Handgun Brought to School by 8 y/o

On April 11, 2019 an eight year-old boy in the second grade at Midview North Elementary School in Lourain County, Ohio brought a semi-automatic handgun to school in a backpack. At approximately 9:10 a.m. he showed the weapon to a group of friends and soon teachers were notified. Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene and took the handgun “as evidence.”

Apparently, little has been done with that evidence. No charges have been brought against the owner of the handgun–presumably one of the boy’s two parents. Instead, deputies arrested the boy at the school and transported him to a “detention home.” He was released on bail later. Charges against the second-grader are pending in the Lorain County Juvenile Court, and additional charges may be pressed.

I was absolutely outraged to learn you arrested and charged the 8 year-old boy who brought a handgun to Midview North Elementary School on April 11, 2019—while simultaneously doing nothing to hold the adult owner of the weapon accountable. Treating a child in the second-grade in this manner is absolutely barbaric. It is NOT the responsibility of children to make sure that adults lock up their firearms. This incident was caused by a gun-owning adult who was reckless and negligent. It’s only blind luck this handgun didn’t injure or kill someone. Stop treating children like criminals and show negligent gun owners there will be REAL consequences when they endanger others, particularly children. Drop ALL charges against this little boy IMMEDIATELY and charge the owner of the handgun with Reckless Endangerment. I will be watching your actions in this case very closely to ensure the safety and well-being of this boy, who is a VICTIM.
