St. Cornelius Elementary & Middle School sits in Chadds Ford, a small Pennsylvania town of 3,600 people 25 miles southwest of Philadelphia. On June 4, 2018, the school held its graduation for 8th graders. At the graduation the students were given bulletproof shields as “gifts” to put in their backpacks when they start high school later this fall.
The “bulletproof” shields—which provide no protection against the rounds fired by semiautomatic assault rifles like the AR-15—were supplied by a company named Unequal free of charge. In return, president Rob Vito of Unequal, who developed the shield, was allowed to address the students and parents at the graduation to promote his product. He bragged to them, “It’s sad that times have called for such a product to be invented, but we have answered the call.”
St. Cornelius already has tight security, including extra deadbolt locks on all classroom doors and an entry system requiring validation via driver’s license.
Please contact St. Cornelius principal Barbara Rosini and give her the following message (personalized to your liking):
I can’t tell you how disgusted I was to learn that you allowed Unequal president Rob Vito to give your graduating 8th graders bulletproof shields and speak at their graduation ceremony. This was a total and complete abdication of reponsibility on your part, both as a principal and a faith leader. The Catholic Church teaches that a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities met. These children have a RIGHT to go to school every day without worrying about being attacked by a violent person who has easy, immediate and often legal access to guns. What have you done, what has your administration done, to lobby for local and state laws that would keep firearms out of the hands of violent individuals in your community? Have you done ANYTHING? And yet you have the temerity to give these children bulletproof shields and send them the message that you’ve failed them completely and don’t care enough to save them? SHAME ON YOU. You should do the following three things immediately: Apologize to the students for giving them these shields, volunteer to take back shields from students who don’t want them and destroy them in a furnace, and resign from your position.
