Action Alert:
Demand California Governor signs Act to Save Lives

The California Legislature has passed AB 392: The California Act to Save Lives, perhaps recognizing that California’s police forces are out of control.

When it comes to shooting suspects, innocent people, passers-by, California is in a league of its own.

One Pulse wants its members to demand California Governor Gavin Newsom signs it as soon as he can.

The number of killings by California police is staggering, particularly in Los Angeles.  One recent news article in the United Kingdom’s Guardian reports:

“Los Angeles has consistently ranked as one of America’s deadliest regions for police violence, with one analysis finding that police shoot, on average, one person every five days. The county sheriff’s department (LASD) – which killed Twyman and polices millions of people in the LA area outside of city limits – has a troubled recordof brutality claims. Leading the department is Alex Villanueva, the elected sheriff sworn in last year and now mired in scandals, including over his reinstatement of a deputy previously fired for domestic violence and his collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice).

“The FBI is also investigating a secret society of tattooed officers and other ‘gang-like groups’ inside LASD – and whether deputies planted evidence and falsified reports.

“’LA county sheriff’s deputies are emboldened by who the sheriff is,” said Melina Abdullah, a Black Lives Matter organizer who helps track killings and works with families. “There are gangs within the sheriff’s department’.”

The ACLU, which is also eager to get this bill signed, said:  “Police officers should avoid using deadly force whenever possible. But, right now, officers can legally use deadly force and kill someone even when they have other alternatives.”

This act when signed into law will make clear that police officers should only use deadly force when necessary – it is hard to imagine this is not already law!

ACTION

Please contact Governor Gavin Newsom through one of the channels below and give them the following message, personalized to your liking:

I am very happy that AB 392: The California Act to Save Lives, introduced this year by Assembly member Shirley Weber (D-San Diego), has passed both houses and will be with you soon for signature.  I know that you will sign this as soon as you can, before more innocent lives are taken by California police.

It seems bizarre that until this is passed, police in your state can actually use lethal force without justification.  This may be why the carnage is so high, with one analysis finding that police shoot, on average, one person every five days.

I know you will do the right thing, and I will be scanning the media for news you have signed it – ideally, I would like to hear from your office when you have done so.  To not sign The California Act to Save Lives is unthinkable.
