Action Alert:
Help Defeat Recall of Aurora Survivor in Colorado House

Update: On June 11, 2019, Kristi Burton Brown and the Colorado GOP dropped their planned recall of Aurora survivor Tom Sullivan! Brown claimed the decision was made “to focus on other essential efforts,” but she and CO GOP were under immense pressure and facing an increasingly powerful group of Sullivan supporters nationwide. Thanks to everyone who participated in this campaign and helped to achieve this significant victory!

On May 13, 2019, Colorado Republican Party vice chair Kristi Burton Brown launched an ugly effort to recall gun violence survivor and  state Representative Tom Sullivan from office. Sullivan lost his son Alex in the horrific 2012 mass shooting in Aurora, then ran for office on a gun control platform and defeated Republican Cole Wist in the 37th district in Arapahoe County.

Brown decided to recall Rep. Sullivan because he was the primary sponsor of Emergency Risk Protection Order legislation that will take effect in Colorado on January 1, 2020. The law will allow family members and law enforcement officers to petition courts to temporarily remove firearms from those in crisis (because of mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, etc.).

When asked why she recalled Rep. Sullivan, Brown replied, “I know there’s a lot of problems with [the ERPO law]. He certainly did campaign on that general policy, but a lot of the particulars that are in that bill violate the privacy of everyday citizens in Colorado. Those details were not campaigned on.” Brown did not state what those “problems,” “particulars,” or “details” are.

The extremist pro-gun group Rocky Mountain Gun Owners planned the recall with Brown and filed a lawsuit challenging the ERPO law. Brown has until mid-July to gather 10,035 signatures to put the recall question before voters in Sullivan’s district.

It is absolutely disgusting that Kristi Burton Brown and the Colorado GOP are attempting to recall gun violence survivor Tom Sullivan from the state House. You people are absolutely repugnant and have no human decency. This man lost his son Alex in a horrific mass shooting in Aurora and came into office doing exactly what he said he was going to do: improving Colorado’s gun laws to save lives. The Emergency Risk Protection Order policy he helped enact into law has due process safeguards for gun owners, a fact you are WELL AWARE of.  You’ve launched this recall because you can’t appeal to voters and win elections and because you think you are above the law. You’re wrong on both counts. Drop this recall now or we are going to defeat it and make Rep. Tom Sullivan stronger than ever. I will be doing everything I can, peacefully and democratically, to dismantle the Colorado GOP completely moving forward.
