Update: On January 6, 2019, Harris County sheriff’s deputies arrested 20 year-old African-American Eric Black, Jr. for the murder of Jazmine Barnes. The sheriff’s office acted on a tip and Black confessed to his role in a shooting in which Barnes and her family were not the intended target, suggesting a case of mistaken identity. At least four independent witnesses had identified the perpetrator as a white male in his 40s. Authorities think this individual was likely a fleeing bystander. Thanks to all who shared this information and kept this case front-and-center for the American public.
At 7:00 a.m. on the morning of December 30, 2018, LaPorsha Washington, her seven year-old daughter Jazmine Barnes, and Jazmine’s three female siblings were driving to a local convenience store for coffee in eastern Harris County, Texas. Jazmine was still in her pajamas.
As they approached a nearby Wal-mart, a man with a “very thin build, pale skin, and blue eyes” approached them in a red/maroon extended-cab pick-up truck and opened fire into Laporsha’s driver’s side window. He then accelerated to get in front of their car and opened fire again. Jazmine was killed. Her mother was shot and wounded. Jazmine’s three sisters were wounded by exploding glass, but are now recovering and attempting to provide a sketch of the killer to law enforcement. The murderer fled from the crime scene and escaped.
The shooting happened near near Wallisville Road and E. Sam Houston Parkway in eastern Harris County, Texas. Social-justice activist Shaun King announced a reward of $100,000 for information leading to an arrest of the killer.
