Action Alert:
Tell Chapel Hill Police to Fire Three-Percenter Officer

Update: Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue issued a statement reading as follows:

“The Chapel Hill Police Department placed Police Officer Cole Daniels on Administrative Leave with pay on Aug. 27, 2018. The pervasiveness of the concerns raised by many regarding his display of a tattoo that is associated with the ‘3 Percenters’ has caused the Department to question his ability to function effectively as a police officer within this community. Therefore, the Police Department initiated an administrative investigation in accordance with our Town’s Personnel Ordinances and policies and procedures. Daniels will remain on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Consistent with our Council-Manager form of government, and our Town’s Disciplinary Process, any potential serious disciplinary action will be taken in consultation with the Town Manager’s Office and the Town’s attorneys.”

The scope and results of that investigation have not been reported.

Recently, an officer with the Chapel Hill Police, Cole Daniels, was photographed while standing guard over “Silent Sam,” the now-toppled statue of a Confederate soldier that stood on the University of North Carolina campus. In the photograph, Daniels has his sleeves rolled up and you can clearly see he has a “Three-Percenter” tattoo on his right forearm.

The Three-Percenters are a “Patriot” militia group that (wrongly) believe only 3% of colonial Americans fought against Britain in the Revolutionary War (actually it was 15%). Three-Percenters pride themselves on being willing to violently oppose what they see as federal government tyranny in modern-day America. Their members often make threats aimed at legislators when gun control reforms are considered at the local, state and federal level.

Like the dreaded “Oath Keepers,” Three-Percenters counsel their members who are law enforcement officers to disobey orders they personally believe to be unconstitutional; such as orders to enforce gun laws.

Please contact Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue through one of the channels listed below and give him the following message (personalized to your liking):

I am contacting you to demand you fire “Three-Percenter” police officer Cole Daniels. This is not a situation that is going to be fixed by Officer Daniels rolling down his sleeves. The Three-Percenters are a violent militia organization that counsels its law enforcement members to disobey orders they see as unconstitutional. Three-Percenters believe most gun laws are unconstitutional despite the judgment of America’s courts and the necessity of using every single tool we have to prevent the loss of lives to gun violence. Every time Officer Cole hits the street there is a chance he will use his own warped judgment and avoid taking steps that could save lives or prevent suffering. That is totally unacceptable to the taxpayers in the Chapel Hill community. Fire Officer Cole immediately. The families in this community do not want to be “protected” by violent extremists who think they have a “right” to take the law into their own hands.
