In February 2019, the House of Representatives sent two modest (and tainted) gun control bills to the Senate for consideration. They have languished there ever since. It is the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates who are now setting the tone on gun control, competing with one another to see who can offer the boldest, strongest plan.
The stand-out proposal so far is New Jersey Senator’s Cory Booker’s call for national firearms licensing and registration. Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg and ex-Colorado governor john Hickenlooper are calling for national licensing alone. Kamala Harris would sign a strong set of executive orders on day 1 to reduce gun violence. Eric Swalwell is basing his entire presidential campaign on the issue of gun control, focusing on an assault weapons ban. Other lesser known candidates like Marianne Williamson and Andrew Yang have offered plans.
The gun control competition among these candidates is central to our effort to save lives. The intensity of their debates and advocacy on gun control will set the tone for Congressional action (or inaction) on the issue in 2021.

Thank you for becoming the first presidential candidate to support a national licensing and registration system for gun owners! This has been the answer to disarming violent Americans and preventing shootings all along. L&R works in every other democracy and it will work here. As I consider who to vote for in 2020, I want to hear you talking about your gun licensing and registration plan on the campaign trail as often as possible. Get your chest out and brag about it!

I appreciate your promise to sign a strong set of executive orders on gun control on day 1 of your presidency, as well as your support for a federal assault weapons ban. I would love to see you support national gun licensing & registration, however. Licensing and registration of fully-automatic firearms under the National Firearms Act has been an absolute success story since 1934 (those weapons rarely turn up on crime scenes). L&R is the policy we need to disarm violent people in our society and prevent shootings. It works in every other democracy and it will work here.

Registration would help law enforcement trace crime guns and deter criminal activity involving firearms. Message for candidates who have yet to offer a gun control plan:
I am considering which candidate to support in the 2020 presidential election and have yet to see you offer a plan on gun control. This issue is VERY important to me. We have the means to disarm violent people in our society and create safe public spaces, but it will take bold policies. If you want me to stand behind you, tell me exactly what you’re going to do to reduce gun violence in this country.
