Journalist Betsy Woodruff published a blockbuster piece at The Daily Beast detailing the reassignment of analysts in the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) who were tasked with studying the threat from homegrown domestic terrorists.
The number of analytic reports produced by DHS on this topic, including threats from white supremacists, has “dropped significantly” over the past year and generated concern at HQ. Yet senior DHS officials are claiming they’ve made domestic terror information collection at the agency “more effective” by disbanding the group of analysts assigned to the task!
There is a lengthy history of mass shootings perpetrated by white supremacists and other right-wing extremists in the United States. This includes the horrific execution of nine African-American parishioners in a historic church in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015. The Trump administration has known affinity for neo-Nazis and other right-wing extremists, most famously displayed when Donald Trump said he believes “very fine people” marched as Nazis during the rioting and lethal violence in Charlottesville, Virginia in August 2017.
Please contact Department of Homeland Security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen through one of the channels below and give her the following message, personalized to your liking:
I was disgusted to learn that DHS disbanded the Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A), the group of analysts tasked with studying the threat from homegrown domestic terrorists. This is a disturbing move by an administration with a long history of coddling and praising white supremacists and other violent right-wing extremists. You are playing with the lives of Americans across the country by enabling this type of violence in our communities. That you might be doing this because you see right-wing attacks as serving your political ends is even more gruesome. I demand you reinstate I&A immediately and allow these analysts to resume their work. If you do not, you should expect to see nonviolent protest. If you are going to put our loved ones in danger, we are going to make you uncomfortable. The safety of our communities is not something we take lightly. We vote and will organize as necessary.
