Action Alert:
Tell Kansas Congressman to Support Students on Gun Control

Update: Congressman Kevin Yoder was defeated by Democrat Sharice Davids, a freshman candidate, in the 2018 midterm elections. “He’s definitely not running [again in 2020]” said one of Yoder’s longtime political advisers.  Rep. Davids is first openly LGBTQ person to represent Kansas in Congress and the first Native-American woman to serve in Congress. During the campaign, Davids proudly touted her pro-gun control credentials.

Students in Kansas’ 3rd congressional district think the issues of school safety and gun control are so important they’ve organized a “Town Hall for Our Lives” for April 7, 2018 and invited their congressman, Rep. Kevin Yoder (R)  and everyone running against him to attend and have an important conversation.

Yoder took a handsome amount of money from the NRA during the 2016 election cycle.

All seven of Congressman Yoder’s challengers will be attending the event, but Rep. Yoder has indicated he will not, and issued a statement that was condescending and disrespectful to the coalition of Kansas City teenagers that planned the town hall:

“Kevin appreciates the invitation to this Democratic primary event. He looks forward to debating their candidate in the fall after they have picked their nominee,” said his spokesman.

Yoder was given a 93% rating by the National Rifle Association during his last (re-election) campaign. And he had no problem talking about guns during a  Kansas City Star town hall in 2017, when a questioner asked him if gun reform was worth trying to save lives. Yoder responded, “Restricting [people’s] Second Amendment rights isn’t going to make them feel any safer.”

Please contact Rep. Kevin Yoder through one of the channels below and give him the following message (personalized to your liking):

I am outraged that you will not sit down and have a conversation with a group of students from both sides of the Kansas City state line and have an honest, productive conversation on gun violence and what we can to do prevent it. Your statement to the students regarding their invitation to the Town Hall for Our Lives was immature and disrespectful. Apparently, the thousands of dollars you take from the NRA is more important to you than their safety, their very lives. I was not that interested in your upcoming re-election race before, but I am taking a great interest now and will be actively involved. If you expect to attract enough votes to win, I would recommend you change your mind and sit down to talk with these students, and soon. If you don’t have the integrity and decency to stop violent people from legally buying guns, we’ll find someone else who does.
