On May 2, 2019, Michael Bennet of Colorado became the 7th U.S. Senator to seek the Democratic nomination for president in 2020. Bennet is running to “restore integrity to our government,” but of the Democratic Senators vying for the nomination (Bennet, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar, Kamala Harris, Corey Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand and Bernie Sanders), he is the only one who hasn’t co-sponsored S. 66, California Senator Dianne Feinstein’s Assault Weapons Ban of 2019.
Feinstein’s bill is a reasonable and necessary response to repeated mass shootings involving AR-15s and similar semiautomatic rifles in the United States. S. 66 would ban the sale, manufacture, transfer and importation of 205 specific models of assault weapons plus any firearm that accepts a detachable magazine and has one or more military characteristics (pistol grip, forward grip, barrel shroud, threaded barrel, folding/telescoping stock, etc). Owners of existing assault weapons can keep them under S. 66.
Michael Bennet has a mixed record on guns. The NRA gives him just a 7 percent approval rating because Bennet voted for Senate legislation to close the “gun show loophole” and ban high-capacity magazines that hold more than 10 rounds (a reform included in S. 66). On the other hand, Bennet voted to let Amtrak riders check guns in their baggage.
The Colorado Senator told CBS News, “I wouldn’t [run] if I didn’t think I had a chance to win.” Bennet needs to understand that NO DEMOCRAT can win the 2020 nomination for president without being strong on gun control and backing restrictions on assault weapons. The votes aren’t there.

Senator Bennet, I was surprised to see you announce a run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 given your lackluster record in the Senate on gun control. There has been such horrific gun violence in Colorado in places like Aurora and Columbine—it’s disturbing to me that you don’t seem to care. I can assure you I WILL NOT vote for a candidate who doesn’t support tough gun laws, including an assault weapons ban. Seven Democratic Senators are now running for president. You are the ONLY one who hasn’t co-sponsored S. 66, the Assault Weapons Ban of 2019 introduced by Sen. Dianne Feinstein. That is unacceptable. We have seen, in one mass shooting after another, the damage that semiautomatic rifles outfitted with high-capacity ammunition magazines can do to civilians. It is time for a serious de-proliferation effort to get these weapons out of our communities. I refuse to leave a society teeming with battlefield rifles to my children and future generations. Senator, I’m not sure what you’re thinking, but you will not win the Democratic nomination for president in 2020 unless you get right on this issue.
