Governor-elect Ron Desantis announced the formation of a “Transition Advisory Committee on Public Safety” that will look at the issue of gun violence in Florida’s schools and offer recommendations to state legislators. Not a single one of the committee’s 50+ members is an advocate for tougher laws to deny firearms to violent individuals!
Desantis named 17 year-old Kyle Kashuv, the lone student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who has advocated for pro-gun policies, to the committee. But he didn’t name any of the MSD students who advocate for gun control through March for Our Lives (David Hogg, Emma Gonzalez, etc.), even though their leadership and advocacy has won historic, life-saving reforms in Florida and changed the way Americans look at the gun issue.
The chair of Ron Desantis’ public safety committee is Kent Stermon, the chief operating officer at Total Military Management, a private company with clients including the Department of Defense. Other members include Polk County sheriff Grady Judd, who told his constituents to “get a concealed firearms license and carry [a gun] and if you need to shoot somebody, shoot them a lot” and Jeff Bell, the president of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputies Association, who told Fox host Laura Ingraham, “It’s not the gun that’s the problem … I’ll hold that belief until the day I die.”

Desantis (governor-elect)
I just saw a roster of the individuals you have appointed to your “Transition Advisory Committee on Public Safety” and I’m absolutely disgusted by it. You have stocked the committee with scores of gun nuts and businessmen looking to profit from school shootings. Meanwhile, you did not appoint a single member of March for Our Lives, the incredible group founded by Marjory Stoneman Douglas H.S. students that won life-saving reforms in Tallahassee and changed the way Americans look at the gun issue. Your committee is noticeably devoid of any gun violence survivors actually, save Kyle Kashuv, the lone student at MSD who has publicly embraced the NRA’s pro-gun policies. Your disgusting attempt to sell Floridians’ public safety out to the gun lobby and its bagmen will not be tolerated. If you don’t change this committtee’s roster immediately and add several advocates who want tougher state/federal laws to disarm violent individuals, then you are going to see massive protests at the committee’s hearings and your offices at the Capitol. Too many Floridians have had their lives stolen by gun violence to tolerate this type of corruption and cruelty. Change the composition of your public safety committee dramatically to include gun violence survivors and gun violence prevention advocates or we are going to be in your face constantly.

Too many Floridians have had their lives stolen by gun violence to tolerate this type of corruption and cruelty. If Ron Desantis doesn’t get on board soon with a real agenda to disarm violent individuals, he is going to take the Florida GOP down with him for good. Bank on it.
