Update: On May 8, 2019, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed SB 7030 privately and with little fanfare. School districts will be allowed to arm K-12 teachers when the law goes into effect on October 1, 2019. Thanks to all those who took action to fight this immoral legislation.
Republican state legislators in Tallahassee have sent legislation to arm teachers to the desk of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis despite the opposition of students, educators, and Florida voters.
Legislation approved last year allows some Florida school personnel (not teachers) to carry firearms at work after receiving training through the “Guardian” program. This year’s bill, SB 7030, expands the program to allow for the arming of teachers as well. [School boards and sheriffs determine whether or not to participate in the “Guardian” program.]
The president of the Florida Education Association said that “arming teachers in the state of Florida is not a real solution.” According to a March Quinnipiac poll: “Stricter gun laws would do more to reduce gun violence in schools, 58% of [Florida] voters say, as 32% say armed teachers would do more to reduce gun violence in schools.” March For Our Lives co-founders told DeSantis, “All we are asking is to be safe. We don’t want any more guns in our schools. We want to live, learn and prosper — not run, fight and hide.” Even Broward County (Parkland) sheriff Gregory Tony, appointed by Gov. DeSantis, said SB 7030 was likely “to create a tragic scenario where innocent people can get injured or killed.”

Governor DeSantis, I want to see you VETO SB 7030. The people of Florida have spoken loud and clear and DO NOT want armed teachers in K-12 schools! Teachers and students are also overwhelmingly against this dangerous expansion of the “Guardian” program that would create MORE gun violence, not less. You know damn well this is being done for one reason only: so the NRA’s corporate benefactors can sell more guns and then funnel that largesse to Republicans. I haven’t paid much attention to your campaigns in the past, but if you sign SB 7030 into law, I’m going to dedicate my life to ensuring you are never elected to political office again. The safety of children is that important to me, and I will not sit idly by while you sacrifice their lives to your masters in the treasonous, criminal NRA. VETO THIS BILL!
