Action Alert:
Tell “The View” to Fire Meghan McCain for Promoting Gun Confiscation Myth

On October 30, 2018, Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams appeared via satellite on ABC’s daytime program “The View” to talk about the upcoming midterm election. During the interview, she was ambushed by 34 year-old Republican “View” co-host Meghan McCain,  who attempted to bully Abrams into a ridiculous, NRA-inspired “gotcha” moment.

McCain started by describing Everytown for Gun Safety as an “anti-gun group” and pointing out that Abrams bragged about her ‘F’ rating from the NRA. After claiming that the AR-15 is “the most popular rifle in America,” McCain asked Abrams, “Do you, like Everytown, supporting banning the AR-15?”

Abrams noted that her family has a long tradition of gun ownership and hunting, but said, “I do not believe that weapons of mass destruction like the AR-15 belong in civilian hands. I think they should be prohibited from civlian use.” She received a loud round of applause from the studio audience in response. McCain, now desperate, told Abrams, “I assume that by banning [the AR-15] you would be rounding them up…from civilians in Georgia.”

McCain was promoting a “confiscation myth” developed by the NRA to stoke fear and anger in its well-armed supporters. The myth is centered around a Big Lie: that assault weapons bans can only be enforced if law enforcement goes to every single homeowner’s door and forcefully confiscates whatever assault weapons they find. In truth, such tactics have never been employed in the seven states that have enacted assault weapons bans (CA, CT, HI, MA, MD, NJ, NY). In each of these states, previously-owned assault weapons are “grandfathered” and their owners are allowed to keep them. In some cases, these weapons might have to be registered with the government, but there is no door-to-door process to check registrations and Meghan McCain knows that full well.

I am absolutely disgusted by the rude manner in which Meghan McCain treated Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams on “The View” on October 30, 2018. McCain attempted to ambush Abrams with a crude “confiscation myth” developed and promoted by the NRA. This myth claims that the only way police can enforce assault weapons bans is by going to the door of every homeowner and forcefully taking every AR-15 and similar rifle they find.  This is absolute nonsense. Seven states have enacted assault weapons bans and NONE of them have ever enforced the law in this manner. In fact, each state allows for those who previously owned assault weapons (pre-ban) to “grandfather” them and keep them! Some of those states require registration of grandfathered assault weapons, but there has never been a time when such registrations were checked by law enforcement door-to-door. The federal assault weapons ban of 1994-2004 also allowed for grandfathering (but did not require registration). Meghan McCain knows all this and was purposely lying to your national audience in order to create the false impression that Stacey Abrams wants to use Gestapo-like tactics to  foster violence against gun owners. It is repugnant that McCain descended to these depths in the wake of the Tree of Life synagogue shooting. You should fire her immediately.
