Action Alert:
Tell Virginia Leaders to Consider Gun Control During Special Session

On May 31, 2019, an engineer resigned suddenly from his job at a municipal building in Virginia Beach. As they day ended, he opened fire in the parking lot and on three floors with a silenced .45-caliber handgun outfitted with high-capacity ammunition magazines. Twelve people were killed and four wounded in the gruesome mass shooting.

VA House Speaker Kirk Cox (lt) and Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment (rt).

After the tragedy, it was reported that Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment had killed a bill in committee (SB 1748) that would have banned high-capacity magazines. Such magazines are detachable and hold more than 10 bullets. SB 1748 was voted down on a party-line vote by Republicans in January.

On June 3, Governor Ralph Northam called for a special session of the Virginia state legislature to consider SB 1748 and other gun control bills that received no consideration during the 2019 legislative session. “I will be asking for votes and laws, not thoughts and prayers,” said Northam.

Unfortunately, Norment and Virginia House Speaker Kirk Cox are indicating they will only hold votes on legislation to stiffen sentences for gun crimes. The U.S. already incarcerates a higher percentage of its population than any other country.

Please contact Virginia House Speaker Kirk Cox and Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment through one of the channels below and give them the following message, personalized to your liking:

When the special legislative session begins in July, I want to see you put MULTIPLE gun control bills on the floor for a vote, including SB 1748 (high-capacity ammunition magazine ban), the “emergency risk protection order” policy, and assault weapons ban legislation. This blood from the Virginia Beach shooting and so many other episodes of gun violence is on YOUR hands because you have done absolutely nothing to disarm violent individuals in Virginia in a career spanning decades. I WILL NOT accept further attempts by the GOP to incarcerate Virginians in place of gun control. The U.S. already incarcerates more of its citizens than any nation on earth. If jailing people stopped shootings, we wouldn’t be seeing any gun violence in this country. No more fake solutions, no more taking money from the criminals who run the NRA and putting the lives of Virginians at risk needlessly. Get in there July and do SOMETHING to prevent the next violent person from arming for a shooting spree. If you do not put gun control bills on the floor for a vote, I will dedicate my life to organizing so you are never elected (or appointed) to office again. We cannot let you continue to sacrifice lives for personal power and wealth.

Hey @Speaker Cox & @TommyNorment, if you don’t put gun control bills on the floor 4 votes in July, I’ll be organizing to defeat you in November. https://www.onepulseforamerica.com/action-alert/tell-virginia-leaders-to-consider-gun-control-during-special-session/ #GunControlNow
