Action Alert:
Thank Ellen’s for Standing up to the NRA and Gun Thugs

Update: Ellen’s issued a press release which reads as follows:

Within hours of the message being placed on the receipts, the NRA was aware of it and issued a boycott of the restaurant that was read and retweeted by tens of thousands of people. The reaction was instantaneous and overwhelming, with feedback streaming in from around the world. Over the next four days, the restaurant received thousands of social media post comments, multiple threats, fake reviews, prank phone calls, and visits from individuals who stood outside the restaurant to discourage people from dining there. The positive response to the boycott was far greater, with an outpouring of support in the form of patronage, verbal and written comments of support, and, importantly, in the form of donations to the cause. The entire Ellen’s team is excited that the ‘receipt heard around the world’ has taken on a life of its own, bringing in donations and support from around the globe.

Thanks to everyone who took this action and stood behind Ellen’s!

When the NRA’s annual meeting came to Dallas, Texas from May 4-6, 2018, the all-day brunch hotspot Ellen’s filled up with the convention’s attendees.

Unfortunately, these attendees subjected the restaurant’s staff to racist dialogue. Ellen’s owner Joe Groves made a list of all “the vile, racist, moronic conversations overheard from NRA attendees.” “They don’t even speak softly,” he added. Ellen’s started printing this message at the bottom of customers’ receipts:

Thanks for visiting Ellen’s! A portion of this week’s proceeds will be donated to organizations dedicated to implementing reasonable and effective gun regulation.

The NRA immediately called for a boycott of Ellen’s. Death threats began pouring into the restaurant from pro-gun activists nationwide. For a moment Joe Groves wavered, changing the statement on the receipts to placate gun fetishists, but then found his footing again and announced Ellen’s would be making a $15,000 donation to Moms Demand America for Gun Sense in America.

Please take the following two actions:

1) Contact Ellen’s through one of the channels below with the following message (personalized to your liking):

Thank you so much for standing up to the NRA and pro-gun activists who attempted to intimidate you. You promised to support an organization seeking reasonable public policy to keep guns from getting into the wrong hands, and you lived up to your word with your $15,000 donation to Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense. Now I want to make you some promises. Number one, next time I’m in Dallas I will make a point to eat at your restaurant. Number two, whenever I see family/friends traveling to Dallas, I will recommend your establishment. When we all stand together with this type of courage, we will have safe communities free from the scourge of gun violence.
