Action Alert:
Thank Everytown and Giffords for Supporting a Ban on Assault Weapons

The two “Bigs” in the gun control movement are now supporting an Assault Weapons Ban.

On February 23, 2018, One Pulse for America launched a campaign calling on Everytown for Gun Safety (& Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense) and Giffords to take a public position in support of the Assault Weapons Ban (AWB). The two best-resourced groups in gun control had never supported such a ban.

Everytown supported a ban on sales of assault weapons as part of a list of policies it called on Congress to enact one month after the Parkland shooting.

Eleven days later, Giffords announced its support for the AWB. Giffords’ plan to regulate assault weapons is tougher in some ways than the Assault Weapons Ban of 2018 introduced by Sen. Dianne Feinstein.  For example, Giffords calls for all existing assault weapons to be registered with the federal government under the National Firearms Act (1934).

On March 12, 2018, Everytown for Gun Safety & Moms Demand issued a press release in which they supported prohibiting the sale of assault weapons. “Assault-style rifles have been used in the five deadliest mass shootings of the past decade—three of which happened in the past five months,” Everytown wrote.

With the two gun control Bigs now at optimum intensity in their advocacy, our push with the students to save lives will be stronger than ever (and hopefully, unstoppable).

Please contact Everytown and Giffords to thank them for their new assault weapons policy. Feel free to use the following message, personalized to your liking:

I was so excited to see the announcement about the change in your policy on assault weapons. The Parkland students and so many other young people across the country are leading with the issue of an assault weapons ban. They deserve to have the strongest gun control groups behind them. Your organization has shown it is up to the task. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
