Update: On April 22, 2019, Kamala Harris promised to sign a number of executive orders on gun control on Day 1 of her presidency. This includes mandating a background check requirement for “anyone who sells more than five guns a year” and ordering the ATF to revoke the license of any gun dealer that breaks the law. Harris has also come out in support of an assault weapons ban.
On January 28, 2019, Senator Kamala Harris conducted a town hall meeting in Des Moines, Iowa after announcing she would seek the Democratic nomination for the presidency in 2020. At the event, local pastor Wallace Bubar of the Central Presbyterian Church of Des Moines asked Harris what she would do as president to reduce rates of gun death that are astronomically higher than you see in other democracies.
“We have got to have smart gun safety laws in this country,” Sen. Harris responded. “You can be in favor of the Second Amendment and also understand there is no reason in a civil society that we have assault weapons around communities that can kill babies and police officers.”
Sen. Harris called the NRA a “paper tiger” and criticized Members of Congress who failed to act after the mass murder of children at Sandy Hook Elementary on December 14, 2012. Those lawmakers should be required to view “autopsy photographs of those babies” in a “locked room, no press, no one, nobody else,” she said. Then they might vote their conscience next time.
“We’re not waiting for a good idea, we have the good ideas [on gun policy],” she concluded. “We’re not waiting for a tragedy. We have seen the worst human tragedies we can imagine. What’s missing is for people in the U.S. Congress to have the courage to act the right way.”

Senator Harris, I watched your CNN Town Hall in Des Moines, Iowa on 1/28/19 and was so impressed by the answer you gave to a local pastor’s question about gun violence. You showed no hesitation or fear in responding and made it clear you are ready to go through the treasonous, white supremacist NRA to do what must be done to protect our children and communities. That is the kind of unapologetic, INTENSE approach on gun control I’ve wanted from Democrats for decades! Your announced support for universal background checks and an assault weapons ban renewal is much appreciated, but please also become an advocate for national licensing & registration. As you know, the instant computer check screening system for gun buyers (just 2 mins. long) constantly allows people with a history of violence to legally purchase firearms, including a majority of our mass shooters. We desperately need a federal system that involves a waiting period and a human element, forcing buyers to have direct contact with law enforcement. The prohibited categories for firearm purchasers under federal law should also be revised. They are badly out-of-date and not reflective of the best research currently available on violent misdemeanants, alcohol abusers, the mentally ill, etc. We MUST have more accurate gun buyer screening that takes the time necessary to get things right and protect public safety.
