Update: On May 19, 2019, FastCompany published a profile of Levi’s work on gun violence prevention. The company’s choice to get behind gun control has not negatively affected its bottom line. The company experienced double-digit top-line growth for six quarters in a row, including the quarter after it announced its GVP programs. Investors “are hungry for companies that have a strong moral compass and aren’t afraid to weigh in on these matters,” Bergh told FastCompany.
On September 4, 2018 Levi Strauss CEO Chip Bergh published a knock-out op-ed in Forbes in which he announced his company was taking several new bold steps on gun violence prevention:
1) Levi Strauss has established the Safer Tomorrow Fund, which will direct more than $1 million in philanthropic grants to nonprofits & youth activists working to end gun violence in America.
2) Levi Strauss is partnering with Everytown for Gun Safety to create Everytown Business Leaders for Gun Safety, a coalition of business leaders who believe they have a “moral obligation” to address America’s epidemic of gun violence.
3) Levi Strauss is doubling its usual employee donation match to organizations/activists aligned with the Safer Tomorrow Fund.
Bergh, a retired army officer, wrote, “As retired four-star general Michael Hayden once said, ‘There are some weapons out there that frankly nobody should have access to. And actually, there are some people out there who should never have access to any weapons.'”
Please contact Levi Strauss CEO Chip Bergh and give him the following message, personalized to your liking:
Thank you so much, Chip, for the new steps you announced Levi Strauss will take to address America’s epidemic of gun violence. I am so excited Levi’s will be funding grassroots work to prevent gun violence, including work by some of the incredible youth leaders who emerged after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas H.S. I also think Everytown Business Leaders for Gun Safety is a terrific idea and I hope your bold leadership will inspire other companies to join quickly. I am so sick and tired of the constant gun violence we are seeing in this country. It is destroying families and communities. By stepping up, you’ve given me faith that We The People can overcome this epidemic and save precious lives.
