Michael Franti & Spearhead appeared at the “End Gun Violence Together Rally” at TOMS shoes HQ in Los Angeles on January 16, 2019 and played a new song they had written about gun violence, titled “Flower.” The song features Victoria Canal on vocals and is dedicated to victims and survivors of gun violence across the country who have channeled their grief into a positive force for change.
“We can be the healing, we can be the flower of the gun,” Franti sings with Canal. The video for the song features victims and survivors of several mass shootings, including from mass shootings including Marjory Stoneman Douglas H.S. in Parkland, Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, and the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas. “Flower” will appear on the upcoming Michael Franti & Spearhead album Stay Human Vol. II, which will be released on January 25.
Franti appeared on “Morning Joe” on MSNBC to talk about the song and the intent behind it. Franti recalled when a stray bullet went through multiple walls in his home, including his son’s bedroom. Miraculously, it harmed no one. “I believe that every single American has a role to play in the healing that is necessary to end gun violence,” he told hosts Joe Scarborough & Mika Brzezinski. “Get into your schools, get into your families, and start to have a conversation about [gun violence and how to prevent it].”
