Action Alert:
Thank Minnesota Legislator for 24-Hour Sit-In on Gun Control

With Republicans in control of the state legislature in Minnesota, some members of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) have been fighting for votes on gun reform during the 2018 legislative session.

“My bottom was sore, but my spirits were high.” Rep. Quade said of her 24-hour sit-in.

One DFL member leading the charge is Rep. Erin Maye Quade. On April 24, 2018, Quade conducted a 24-hour sit-in on the floor of the Minnesota House to demand a vote on H.F. 1669, a compromise bill on universal background checks that is supported by 90% of the state’s residents.

During the sit-in, Quade read the personal stories of gun violence victims and survivors from Minnesota.  “All of these people…their loved ones miss them, and they will love them forever,” she said. “They’re never coming back.”

Immediately after Rep. Quade’s sit-in, Republican House Speaker Kurt Daudt said of H.F. 1669, “I hope that there is [action]. I think there will be. I think there can be.”  A few days later, however, he helped to kill H.F. 1669 and other common-sense gun reforms, stating, “Could gun legislation be something where the NRA supports it? … That’s the sort of thing we would need to look for.”

Please contact Rep. Erin Maye Quade through one of the channels below and give her the following message (personalized to your liking):

Rep. Quade, thank you SO MUCH for conducting a 24-hour sit-in calling for a vote on a very modest and reasonable universal background checks bill, H.F. 1669.  You paid such beautiful tribute to Minnesota victims and survivors of gun violence with the personal stories you read. As you have noted, there is a tremendous intensity among voters on the issue of gun violence prevention that we are not seeing reflected in the Minnesota state legislature (and other state legislatures). You have placed real pressure on the Republican leadership in the Minnesota House and Senate to explain why they have failed to do anything on gun reform. Keep up the pressure! I will certainly be part of efforts to vote out those  preventing you from saving lives.

Please also contact Minnesota House Speaker Kurt Daudt and give him the following message (personalized to your liking):

Speaker Daudt, I am disgusted by your lack of action on the compromise universal background checks bill, H.F. 1669, and other gun reform legislation that could save a large number of lives in Minnesota. It’s rare you see a political leader so brazenly corrupt that he would admit he needs the treasonous (Putin), white supremacist NRA to sign off on a bill before it can be moved forward.  I knew little about you before you killed H.F. 1669. Now I’m going to dedicate my life to ensuring you never see elected office again. See you at the polls in November.
