On April 4, 2019, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and closed the “Boyfriend Loophole” which allows non-married abusers to hold onto their firearms after acts of domestic violence. The bill passed by a vote of 263-158, with 33 Republicans defying the NRA’s orders and joining Democrats in the majority. VAWA is a federal law that protects victims of domestic and sexual violence and funds programs that serve them.
The House VAWA reauthorization would prohibit those convicted of misdemeanor charges of stalking from owning or buying firearms. It would also prohibit non-married dating partners under active restraining orders from owning/buying firearms, thereby closing the “Boyfriend Loophole.”
The NRA ran an insidious propaganda campaign claiming the VAWA reauthorization (H.R. 1585) would disarm wrongly-accused domestic abusers. Senators Joni Ernst of Iowa and Dianne Feinstein of California are working on a companion version of the bill.

Voted For H.R. 1585
As your constituent, I want to thank you for voting for H.R. 1585, the Violence Against Women Act of 2019. This reauthorization contains critical protections for women subject to domestic and sexual violence. I am particularly delighted to see provisions included in the bill that would: a) Prohibit individuals convicted on misdemeanor charges of stalking from owning or buying firearms, and; b) Close the “Boyfriend Loophole” by prohibiting non-married dating partners under active restraining orders from owning/buying firearms. It means the world to me that you ignored the orders of the treasonous/white supremacist NRA and put the safety of abused women first. I will remember that when I go to the polls next and I ALWAYS vote. Now I call on you to pressure your colleagues in the Senate to act on a clean companion bill. Women in America deserve VAWA’s protections and Congress must get this reauthorization done!
Voted Against H.R. 1585
As your constituent, I can’t tell you how upset I was to see you vote against H.R. 1585, the Violence Against Women Act of 2019. This reauthorization contains critical protections for women subject to domestic and sexual violence. H.R. 1585 would also disarm stalkers and abusive boyfriends. It disgusts me to see you side with the treasonous/white supremacist NRA and men who prey on women. I will remember your NO vote on this reauthorization when I next go to the polls and I ALWAYS vote. The safety of women in this district is NOT negotiable! If you can’t do what is moral and prevent this violence, we will replace you with someone who can.
