On November 20, 2018, the founder of the popular shoes company TOMS, Blake Mycoskie, pledged to give $5 million to gun violence prevention organizations during an emotional appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.” It is the single largest corporate contribution to gun violence prevention groups ever. The money will be split among groups like The Black and Brown Gun Violence Prevention Consortium, Everytown for Gun Safety, Faith in Action, Giffords, Live Free, March for Our Lives, and Moms Demand Action.
TOMS has also launched a tool on its website that allows Americans to send free postcards to their U.S. Representatives in Congress telling them to support Universal Background Checks legislation. This policy would require individuals who engage in private sales of firearms to conduct background checks on their buyers in every case save immediately family transactions.
Mycoskie said that he was “overcome with immense fear” for his own kids, “and an understanding that parents across America—especially in communities of color—have been living with that same fear and loss for far too long.” He later told Bustle, “We are proud to evolve our giving model and use all of our resources to amplify the urgency and do our part to end this horrific epidemic in America.”
Please take the following two actions:
1) Send a free postcard to your U.S. Representative asking him/her to support Universal Background Checks through the TOMS website:
2) Send the following message to TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie through one of the channels below (personalized to your liking):
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate TOMS’ decision to support gun violence prevention organizations with $5 million in contributions. Your program allowing Americans to send free postcards to their U.S. Representatives calling for Universal Background Checks is also terrific! I watched you on “The Jimmy Fallon Show” and I could see the emotional connection you have to this issue as a husband and father. That really resonated with me. I think other corporate execs are going to see what you’ve done—the way you talk about gun violence—and feel compelled to take action themselves. Sending my love to you today, Blake! You have given me hope there are enough good people out there to overcome the gun lobby and preserve countless precious lives. I will never forget your kindheartedness. I’ll be a TOMS customer for life.
